12 What are their names?
The 36th Infantry Division, made up of Texas and Oklahoma National Guardsmen, wore the "T-Patch" during World Wars 1 and 2. The blue arrowhead symbolized the Oklahomans of the unit, while the T symbolized the Texans. According to Texas National Guard Public Affairs: The 36th Infantry Division participated in seven major campaigns in the European Theater of World War II. It was the first American combat division to land on the continent of Europe in 1943. During 1943, 1944 and 1945, it led U.S. forces in the invasion of Italy in the Gulf of Salerno, participated in the assault across the Rapido River and was involved in the breakout of the Anzio beachhead and the race to Rome. In August 1944, the division took part in the seaborne invasion of southern France, then fought its way to Germany. After assaulting the Siegfried Line, the 36th entered Germany in March 1945 and crossed into Austria two months later. While in Bavaria and Austria, the division took many prisoners, including such notables as Hermann Goering; Nicholas Horthy, Hungary's dictator; and Leni Reifenstahl, director of Nazi propaganda films. It also freed two former prime ministers of France, two former heads of the French Army, and Charles De Gaulle's sister, among others. In addition, the unit had the sad distinction of participating in the liberation of the Dachau, Hurlach and Landsberg concentration camps. The 36th Infantry was deactivated in 1968, but on May 1, 2004 the 49th Armored Division was redesignated as the 36th Infantry Division in order to be in step with the transformation of Regular Army units. Answer True. In WW1 the Arrowhead and "T" were symbols for the two states the soldiers originated from. However, by 1940, the 36th Division was purely a Texas National Guard unit. When they were called up for active duty, its ranks were filled with soldiers from other regions of the country.
