Every edition of the play has a list of the characters right at the front. It's sometimes called Dramatis Personae. There are more than 27 characters in the play.

However, you will not necessarily see that many characters in every production or film of the play. This is because sometimes directors cut scenes to shorten the overlong script, and minor characters can go by the wayside. Voltimand and Cornelius, Reynaldo, the sailor in 4,6 and the second gravedigger often suffer this fate. In his 1948 film, Laurence Olivier cut the characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, which was pretty harsh.

In some of these the body count is quite high, like Titus Andronicus where 12 die and only two are left alive, or Hamlet where 8 die and no main characters are left. Other tragedies have fewer: Romeo and Juliet (5), Julius Caesar (6, not counting the deaths of anonymous soldiers), Othello (3), King Lear (7), Timon (1), Antony and Cleopatra (6 and anonymous soldiery). Richard III and Richard II, with 5 bodies, are on the high side for a history. The Henry VI plays have two or three deaths. The later histories (the two parts of Henry IV and Henry V) have one death each.
