The Dakota or Santee Sioux were the most easterly group of Sioux tribes.
They were made up of the Mdewakanton (Spirit Lake Dwellers), Wahpekute (Shooters Among Leaves), Wahpeton (Dwellers among Leaves) and Sisseton (Fish Offal Dwellers) tribes . Each tribe consisted of seven bands, a sacred number for all Sioux peoples, giving 4 tribes and a total of 28 bands.

Many Native American tribes lived in clans, but the Iroquois Confederacy is a notable example. This confederation of tribes, which included the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and later the Tuscarora, organized their societies into clans that were often matrilineal, meaning lineage was traced through the mother. Clans served as social units, providing support and identity, with each clan typically associated with specific totems or symbols.

There are four main clans that are direct descendants of Irir Samale - the common ancestor of all ethnic Somalis. These four clans are: Darood, Issaq, Dir, and Hawiye. Within each clan are further divisions of tribes and confederations. All tribes and links to tribes are inherited through one's father. There are minority clans in Somalia that have origins outside of Somali. Some examples are the Benadiir, Reer Shabelle, and other clans. The ancestry of these minority clans vary and can be mixed with these groups: Bantu, Yemeni, Portuguese, Persian, Indian, Oromo, and many other groups. These clans often inhabit the southern regions of Somalia.

The word "Tribes" becomes ambiguous, as for example the Cherokee (Tsalagi) had 23 sub-tribes, and each of these were broken into clans. Basically you could sub-divide to the point where 'millions' would be as good of an answer as any.
