Because you can convert ounces and pounds, and you get 8 ounces per cup. With 16 ounces making a pound you can get an approximate answer to how many cups in a 20 pound bag. So you should get about 40 cups, again depending on size of the food. It could vary depending on how dense the food is. A cup is a measure of volume. A pound is a measure of weight. They do not directly convert.
