The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ died on a Friday and was put that same day in a sepulchre. He was resurrected on the first day of the week : Sunday. Back then Sunday was the first day of the week.

We know this because of the coming feast and other passages like this :

* Mark 14:1 "After two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death." * Matthew 28:1 "In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre."

So the third day He was resurrected. He was in sepulchre : the remaining of the Friday, whole Saturday but Sunday (the third day) He was resurrected. We don't exactly know the precise hour He was resurrected. All we know is that when Mary Magdalene and Mary came, they didn't see the Lord in the sepulchre, but on the way back to the disciples.

* Matthew 28:8-9 "And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him." * Mark 16:9 "Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils."

So we cannot give a definitive answer about the exact time between Jesus Christ death and resurrection.

Within the Jewish/Hebrew culture days are from sunrise to sunrise; 6:00am to 6:00am, and if an event covered several days each day that the event took place on was counted as one whole day.

Jesus died around the ninth hour (3:00pm) on the Friday, then was found alive as the sun was just rising on the Sunday. If the event had being recorded today this would only be said to be a couple (two) days, maybe even less than two days, in fact only around 39 hours.

But due to the event being recorded by within the Jewish culture, the record says that Jesus was dead for three days.

What did Jesus promised that crimal?

When Jesus was crucified He was placed alongside two criminals. The two criminals hurled insults and accusations at Christ as they were all slowly dying. At one point, one of the criminals recognized Jesus as the Messiah and asked that he be remembered when Jesus came into His kingdom. This was clear evidence of saving faith, to which Jesus responded "today you will be with Me in paradise." The criminal believed Jesus was God's Son and that He would rise from the dead. As such, he put his faith in Christ. This is saving faith and those who also trust Christ will see this gentleman in paradise.

Why is Jesus' death and resurrection the most important events in history for Christian's?

Its important because if He didnt ressurect then the law wouldn't be complete. The law was that all sinners would have their punishment in hell. So by Jesus dying, being buried and ressurected then ascended into Heaven the law was complete. Because He is ressurected we can be saved because Jesus is alive not dead.
