It started because on the old Julian Calendar the end of March was the new year at which time their was a celebration that lasted eight days ending on April 1st, so when the majority of Europe transferred over to the Gregorian Calendar, the new year was moved to January, but some people stayed with the Julian Calendar and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1st, so people began to call them April fools because they believed the new year was April 1st.

Origin of April Fools' Day There are several theories about the origin of April Fools' Day. The most popular explanation is the switch to the Gregorian calendar.
