Usually, a university splits its years up either into two semesters, or into four quarters. So, more or less, it'd be two quarters as the equivalent of one semester.
But schools do have rules on how they convert things like quarters into semester equivalents, so if you're thinking about transferring universities, and are looking at how your credits will transfer, contact the new university directly.
