Most dogs also have dew claws. Dew claws are the smaller claws that are higher on the dog's legs. Most dogs have them on the front legs, and some have them on the rear, as well. Dew claws on the rear legs are frequently removed when the animal is young.
So the average dog have between sixteen and twenty claws, with eighteen being the normal.

∙ 12y agoAs a general rule, every dog has atleast 2 dew claws - one on each front leg, unless they are removed. Some dog's may have them on the hind legs as well. The Lundehund, or Puffin Hound, has two dew claws on every leg, meaning it has eight in total! Most dog's only have one on each front leg though.
