The Russian Federation is not divided into states. It has areas that are called federal subjects of Russia. The most recent federal subjects to be named are the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol. This brings its total number of federal subjects to 85. Sometimes the number goes down when two or more federal subjects merge.

∙ 15y agoRussia is broken up into the equivalent of states for government administration purposes. An "Oblast" translates as a region, most likely a heavily populated well developed region such as Moskovskaya Oblast with its own capital, which includes Moscow and the surrounding countryside and then some. An "Okrug" translates as a district, and is usually an autonomous subdivision of an Oblast with its own capital, which might based on local ethnic groups. Nenetsiya Okrug with its capital Nar'yan-Mar, are within Arkhangelskaya Oblast. A "Krai" (pronounced cry) translates as a territory, and is more likely a less populated, less developed and possibly remote equivalent of an Oblast such as Primorskiy Krai and its capital Vladivostok. An Autonomous Republic is usually an ethnically based area or homeland for the local traditional indigenous people which is self-governed and may or may not be part of, or superimposed over an Oblast or Krai, such as Buratiya and its capital Ulan-Ude.

Russia does not have states as such but there are 83 federal subjects, however they do not all enjoy the same autonomy as each other. Some, such as Chechnya, are republics and as such have their own Presidents and Parliaments.
