First, Jesus called 12 deciples. But, after Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus and hung himself, the remaiming 11 disciples elected a new disciple, Matthias.
As well as the 12, there were 72 others whom Jesus used to send out to the surrounding villagers to proclaim his coming. Add to these the women (Mary Magdalene, Mary and Martha of Bethany, Salome etc) and the many whom Jesus healed and taught who decided to follow him, and by the time of his death thousands were already followers.
The gospels record 12 disciples by name (although occasionally disciples have two names that are interchangeable e.g. Peter/Simon, Matthew/Levi). However, Jesus had various groups of disciples. His favourite disciple (the one whom Jesus 'loved') was John. The 'inner circle' of three disciples were Peter, James and John, then came the '12' including Peter, James and John and 9 others, and then there was an 'outer circle' of followers that included Lazarus, Mary and Martha of Bethany, Mary Magdalene, John Mark - in all numbering 72.
Twelve originally. Then Judas left the group, so to speak. Then Matthias was added to bring it back to twelve. We are told in scripture, that Joseph of Arimathea was made a disciple in secret ( for fear of the Jews ) so technically speaking there were at total of 14 disciples.
The Gospels give a different order of the original 12 disciples but always mentions Peter as the first and Judas Iscariot as the last.

Not just believe in Jesus as many Churches teach as Scripture says even the demons believe. But disciples are to be 'imitators' of Jesus as our perfect model.
