According to last year's K-9 2009 census there are 1,401,298 stray dogs in America. And 628,731 are females looking to mate.

*Edit*

The above answer is false. The person who wrote it was very wrong, on so many levels.

Firstly, there is no such thing as a "K-9 Census". There are about 13,600 community animal shelters nationwide that are independent; there is no national organization monitoring these shelters. The terms "humane society" and "SPCA" are generic; shelters using those names are not part of the ASPCA or the Humane Society of the United States.

Currently, no government institution or animal organization is responsible for tabulating national statistics for the animal protection movement. All figures are estimates which may vary widely from state to state.

Secondly, The previous answering individual must have also been inventing numbers, because it is impossible to determine how many stray dogs and cats live in the United States; many estimates for cats alone range up to 70 million.

Here in Houston Texas, Animal Control receives an average of 138 calls per day to retrieve stray animals. They can only respond to around 30-36 calls. That's over 100 unanswered requests per day. Animal control just can't keep up, because there is an estimated 1.2 million stray dogs in Houston alone. The number of feral cats is even higher, because they live under houses, hide in storm drains, & only come out at night.

Spay & neuter your damned pets everyone... & quit making stuff up people.
