The real answer is no. Doubles does not entitle you to an extra roll and move, but it does mean that you can and must move the number on the dice four times instead of two.

No, you don't get to roll again... the doubles offer the ability to double your move (instead of each die counting once, each counts twice on a double roll), but that is where the advantage ends. Once you are done moving, it is again the other player's turn.

One rough guideline is that you should be at least a full dice roll ahead of your opponent in the pipcount and in backgammon it is considered that 8 is the average value of a dice roll.

- Do I have more home board points made than my opponent?

- Do I have a prime (blockade) happening, and how does it compare to that, if any, of my opponent?

- How many of the 36 possible rolls of the dice will improve my position on the next roll?

- Do I have my opponent in a position that is too good to double and I should just play on for the gammon?
