Actually UCLA is just like any other major Division I school; And as there is no specific activities that will sway the admissions board to say "wow that kid did that activity just for us" well all activities look the same to all colleges, and there arent any that are better then others, except maybe in the duration and quality department.
there is no minimum. but i suggest 3 or more, and 2 where you have a leadership position.

i think grades should determine whether or not you get into extracurricular activities. It won't be fair for people who tried their hardest to get good grades because if you didn't try then why add something extra. if you tried your hardest then you should be the one getting more opportunities.

The major disadvantages to participating in activities outside of school are time and money. As long as you can afford the activity and it doesn't take time away from you studies it can be a good thing.
They look good on a college resume and show you get involved with your school. Some extracurricular activities also show some of your interests. Perhaps more importantly, they help to broaden your mind and social skills. Education isn't, or shouldn't be, just learning exam material.
