Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church believes that there is only One God, but that He has three Persons. It is impossible to understand, but perhaps an analogy might help. A person (for instance you or me) is one person but they possess two natures: the spiritual and the material, or your body and your soul. But there is only one you. God is the other way around, there is only One God, but He is possessed by three persons, so, although there are three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, there is only One God.

Catholic AnswerCatholics worship the One God. People tend to get confused as God has revealed to us that He is a Trinity, in other words, there are three persons IN the One God. This is not really something that any human being can understand, we must accept it on faith, however, perhaps an analogy might help:

People are composed of two things: a spirit and a body. Some people say that they "have" a body. When the soul (or spirit) leaves the body, the body dies. The soul, however, having no parts, does not die. So, my name is Jim, and I have a soul and a body, but I am not two people, I am one person having two natures. Now, God is the other way around. He is three people but, together they only have one nature (see why I said we can't understand it?) Just as I have two natures but am only one person, He is three persons but only has one nature, the nature is God - there is only ONE God, but that God is manifested in three persons.

Perhaps that might be an easier way to understand it. God manifests Himself to us as Father, He also manifests Himself to us as the Creator and Savior (and in that we call Him the Son), and He also manifests Himself to us as Love (or charity) (and in that way we call Him the Holy Spirit.
