* this is an untruth. There is no data collection on the number of hoarders that are in America. Task forces have been set up and as people come forward or are reported we are able to count. However due the secretive nature of hoarding there is no real way to know for sure. what can be said is that is a pervasive problem that seems to be growing. also research shows that it is a distinctive disorder that is not a subtype of OCD as previously thought. I am a researcher who has looked extensively at hoarding and if you do an academic search of research studies and peer-reviewed academic journal articles you will find the same answer. I have no idea where the number quoted came from but it is inaccurate. thank you
