For some strange reason, schools seem to teach the use of centimetres, although it is not in general use outside of primary and secondary education. I gues the reason for using the centimetre is that is a size that children can relate to more easily than mm or m, for example they could relate a cm to the thickness of their finger and have a good feel for how big 5 cm or 10 cm actually is.
