Monsters in Minecraft can consist of:
Creepers - (Green)
Creepers explode if hit or close to. (Make sure you are away from your house if you want it to blow up.
Zombies - (Looks like default character but with a dark green skin)
Follow you and try to get you killed, these can be irritating if in a large group.
Skeleton - (A skeleton, duh! Its grey if you didn't know)
Equipped with a bow the skeleton can be a pain in the pie to kill if you don't have another bow or a better weapon.
Spiders - (Black)
Can climb up walls so they can wait for you then drop, this mob is 2 blocks wide making it not able to go through a door in your house.
Cave Spiders - (Blue)
Unlike the normal spider this spider is 1 block wide and when bitten can poison you (can only be found in abandoned mine shafts).
Endermen - (Black)
This mob is 3 blocks high and can teleport towards you, it is a friendly mob until looked at.
Slimes - (Green)
A rare mob that is only hostile if it is a big slime, slimes that are small will not attack you but yet follow you.
Magma Cube- (Redish-Orange)
A rare mob that is some what like the Slime, but made out of magma. They live in the Nether.
Ghast- (White)
A ghost that floats and looks like a fat squid. It shoots fireballs. Ghasts live in the Nether.

For what I know so far, they have zombies, skeletons, spiders, creepers, and zombie pigmen. If you want to see the zombie pigmen, you have to make a nether core reactor.
As of update 1.9.4, there are currently 41 mobs in Minecraft and more are expected to be added in the upcoming 1.10 update.
If you can't see them your Difficulty Setting is on Peaceful. You can get onto easy by going onto options and then clickling it to Easy.
In the overworld: zombies, creepers, skeletons, slimes, spiders, and silverfish. In the nether: magma cubes, blazes, and ghasts. In the end: the enderdragon.
As of update 1.9, there are currently 41 mobs in Minecraft.
If you mean in all mods ever, then potentially thousands. Mods are add-ons to Minecraft created by users, and new ones are made every day. To count how many modded mobs there are in Minecraft would be near impossible
You can download mobs minecraft comes alive
In Minecraft Classic, mobs can't spawn, so they can't exist naturally. If you play the Survival Test, and when mobs spawn there, you can save it and open it in creative mode so then the mobs can stay there. However, in Minecraft Creative Mode, mobs can spawn, but they can't hurt you because you have no healthbar.
