The general recommendation from most health organizations is to exclusively nurse your baby for a minimum of six months. After that, other foods may be given to your child. Those recommendations are just the minimum. To give your baby the very best, breastfeeding should continue well past the baby's first birthday. The longer you nurse, the greater good you are doing for the child. And the positive benefits also extend to the nursing mother. Both in terms of health and emotional benefits.

Any breastmilk at all is beneficial to your baby, but it is recommended that you exclusively breastfeed for around 6 months. Once your baby is able to sit up unassisted, uses a pincer grasp, and loses the tongue-thrust reflex they are developed enough to try out solid foods. Always offer the breast first. Your baby can continue to breastfeed for as long as you both like, but 2 years or more is best.

There is no set answer, and opinions vary. The most important thing is to breastfeed for at least a little while, to give the newborn a chance to ingest colostrum, a substance in breast milk that will give the newborn increased immunity and resistance to diseases. Many consider breast-feeding to be much healthier than bottle-feeding, and recommend it for as long as it's convenient for the mother.

Most medical authorities suggest that the minimum time a baby should be exclusively breast feed is six months. After that time a mother may start introducing some other foods while still nursing the child regularly. Throughout the world, most mothers breast feed their children for two to three years.
