It started when texting first began. Texting began and people started doing it while driving. It started whenever texting began.
Texting while driving appears to be at least as dangerous as driving while highly intoxicated.
Absolutely NOT ! Pay up and learn your lesson !... Far too many people are KILLED by irresponsible drivers texting while driving. You either drive the car - or use your phone - not both at the same time !
According to the LA times, 16141 deaths from texting and driving happened between 2002 and 2007. That's about 269 deaths per month during that time. It's important to note that death rates have been increasing since then and are considerably higher now. 2800 people were killed by the 9-11 terrorist attacks. For comparison, we lose over 3200 people per year from texting and driving.
Look at government statistics on accident reports ! Texting while driving doesn't simply 'bother others' - texting while driving KILLS PEOPLE ! And I speak from experience !
About 700 people a day die for texting while driving, this can be really dangerous but people who do it don't care about and then they end up losing their lives.

Because texting while driving kills people ! Not just the driver - but innocent pedestrians, passengers and other road users !
In order to answer this question more accurately i would need to know what time frame you would like to see the death / injury poll from texting and driving.
