He wrote 18 sonatas for piano. There is also a traditional "19th" sonata which consist of two separate works usually performed as a complete sonata. He wrote 17 church sonatas. He wrote 36 violin sonatas. He also wrote 3 other chamber sonatas, one for bassoon and cello, and two for violin and bass.
If my math is correct, he wrote 75 sonatas.

We need to find out if Bach even wrote toccata and fugue first. It is usually accepted that it is a piece by a very young Bach. If he did write it, it is very different from every other fugal that Bach wrote. He probably made it quickly because if Bach did write this, it was as a practice or test piece.

The German catalogue number of a JS BACH work is called Bach Werke Gezeichnis (abbreviated to BWV). So Cantata N°4 has been catalogued in 1950 as BWV 4, for example. When the Catalogue was revised to include rediscovered works, the was added an Appendix (in German : Anhang, abbreviated to Anh.) So there are Apocryphal Bach Motets assigned the Catalogue numbers BWV Anh. 159-165.
