A recent publication gives an estimate of 1700 adult (i.e. breeding) females, and 550 adult males. Females are typically reproductively mature at around 1 year of age.
There is also a small captive breeding population at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria (see related links).

It depends on the species of the Pygmy possum. with the eastern Pygmy possum! for example! males tend to live to just four years! while females can easily reach eleven years. For the Mountain Pygmy possum, the life span is usually up to an extra year for both males and females.

Hi,that is an easy one there is only around 3000 to 4000.do you know what would happen if Pygmy possums became extinctThere are actually no accurate figures for current pygmy possum populations, as these elusive creatures are not easy for researchers to track. It was estimated that, in 1991, there were about 2,300 pygmy possums in the wild. This figure was up from the 1986 figure of around 2,000. However, a more recent study has suggested that the current figure is only around 1,800 adults.

The predators of the pygmy possums, of which there are five species, include eagles, hawks, owls and quolls. Foxes and feral cats, both of which have been introduced to Australia, are also predators of pygmy possums.
It depends on the species. Most possums of Australia, such as the Ringtail possum, the various Pygmy possums and the six species of gliders, have four nipples. The Brushtail possum has just two nipples in the pouch. The opossum, which is NOT related to possums, has thirteen nipples arranged in a circular form. There may be as many as 17 nipples.
