5 or 9. 5 gets it to your post office. 9 gets it to your mailbox.

Generally speaking, that is. The problem is that some ZIP codes are assigned to several cities. Take the ZIP code is 62812, for example. It has six Illinois cities assigned to it: Rend City, Benton, Barren, Eastern, Steel City and West City.

The best way to guarantee mail delivery is to use the latest ZIP+4 code. Those extra 4 numbers pinpoint the geographic segment, within a five-digit delivery area, such as: a city block, a group of apartments, a P.O. box or an individual high-volume receiver like a university or the IRS.

There are 5 digits in the ZIP code, plus a "ZIP + 4 + 2" which adds up to 11 digits.

To clarify: every street address has a USPS designated ZIP+4 code and aids the USPS in efficient mail sorting and delivery.

The eleven-digit number mentioned above is only used for barcodes on bulk mail. It encompasses eleven numbers that succinctly identify a drop point. However, to actually satisfy the requirements of USPS bulk mail barcode system, twelve digits are necessary.

The first eleven depict three groupings:

1. The delivery zone (first five numbers)

2. The region within the zone (+4)

3. and the exact location for the mail drop (+2 , the delivery point (DP), or the last two digits of a mailbox or flat).

The twelfth and final number in the barcode string is called a "check" digit, used by the USPS to detect errors. It's calculated by adding up the eleven digits, then subtracting the last digit of that result from 10. To illustrate this, the total, when adding up the 11 digits associated with the company I work for, is 34. Since 4 is the last digit in that number, I subtract it from 10 and get our check number, 6.

An address validation system that queries the USPS ZIP+4 database is the only way to get accurate 9-digit ZIP codes and produce 12-digit bar codes.
