I read Unwind, by Neal Shusterman. This book is about 3 different teenagers and their fight for survival. Well, two of them fight for survival; the other was raised to die. Connor and Risa, are called Unwinds, and Lev is a tithe. An Unwind is a kid whose body was donated for organ usage. A tithe, was raised to believe that this is all for the greater good, helping others, "god approves tithing", that kind of stuff. Connor found out he was going to be Unwound, and ran away, but the Juvie cops caught up with him. Scared, he grabs Lev out of a nearby car and runs into the forest. Risa, is in a bus accident on the same highway, because of the backup that Connor caused. Risa was on a bus heading to the harvest camp, which is where Unwinds and tithes are unwound. So, with their not being any live adult on the bus, she scrambles out the door and after Connor and Lev. A Juvie cop, (cop after AWOL unwinds), finds Connor and Lev, but in the fight between them, Connor uses his own stun-gun against him thus becoming the "Akron AWOL", which will become a legend in the harvest camps.
Soon, the three AWOL teens, are in need of food, and a new disguise. So they venture out into the public eye, and get themselves in a mess. After getting food, a cop starts patrolling the area. They decide to get onto a school bus, but at the last second, Connor see's a stork baby. A stork baby, is what replaced abortion, so basically, you have your baby, and you can leave it on someone else's doorstep, as long as they don't catch you first. Connor see's the crying baby and it brings up a bad memory. Unconsciously, he goes up to the doorstep and gets caught looking at it. The woman at the door tells him to take the baby and scram, and he is left with no choice. Risa and Connor take the baby on the school bus. On arrival at the school, they realize they can't escape. Risa had made a 'friend' on the bus, who also had a baby, who later becomes helpful too. When they notice that they can't leave, they hide in the bathroom-during which time, Lev (still thinking tithes are amazing) turns his 'kidnappers' in. He then finds a phone and calls his priest, who basically says "get out while you can" and changes Lev's entire outlook on life. He then realizes the mistake he made and pulls the fire alarm in hopes of freeing Risa and Connor who by then had realized Lev had probably turned them in, made their way into an empty classroom, with a now shrieking baby. A teacher spots them, and goes to investigate. Connor gets her to help them with an easy sentence, "If you turn us in, we'll die,". The teacher helps them and sends them to an Antique Store, where her friend harbors AWOL Unwinds. Lev disappears for several chapters. Risa and Connor (and the baby) are now in a hidden cellar beneath the store. There are 4-5 others in here, like Hayden (becomes pretty good friends with Connor, and really funny) and Roland (Connor and him get in a few conflicts and they freaking hate each other).
A few days later, the teacher comes back and takes the baby (with consent), and then they are loaded into a truck, then another, then another, until eventually they all get into crates inside a plane to make their way to The Graveyard. The Graveyard is run by the Admiral, a retired military chief. The Graveyard is where Unwinds go to hide away until they turn 18.
Lev shows up, and him and Connor come to an understanding over him betraying them. Then after a while, kids start talking. That's when the drama happens. The Admirals helpers are murdered, and no one knows. Connor is enlisted to help him secretly, and the others don't know what to think about it. Roland thinks Admiral is killing Unwinds and starts a rebellion, resulting in a massive heart attack from the Admiral. The hi-jack a helicopter, and head to a hospital. At the hospital Juvie cops show up and takes them all to a harvest camp. There, they await death. Connor is discovered to be the Akron AWOL, and is put on lockdown. Risa, joins the band to bide time. Lev, soon shows up with a few friends of his own (he made them at The Graveyard) and is a clapper (someone with explosives in their blood). Roland is Unwound. Connor is being taken to the clinic to be unwound, and gets juist inside the door when it explodes. Risa is badly injured and Lev helps them all out of the wreckage. Sometime later, Connor wakes up in the hospital, and was given a fake identity, of a 19 year old and won't be unwound. He was given Rolands arm, and eye. Risa, is paralized. Lev, is now a clapper that didn't clap, and is kind of a hero. None of them will be unwound. They all return to The Graveyard, and Connor tells them all that they are going to make themselves heard... Leaving me absolutly desperate for a sequel. :)
