The word count is the number of words in a document or passage of text. It is used as opposed to number of pages, due to the variations in paper sizes, font sizes and spacing. Most Word_processorcan do automatic word counts. Different word counting programs may give varying results, depending on the definition of "word", on the Text_segmentationAlgorithm, and on whether words outside the main text such as footnotes or hidden text are counted.
Novel = Over 40,000 words
Novella = 17,500 to 40,000 words
Novelette = 7,500 to 17,500 words
Short story = Under 7,500 words
The typical range for a novel is 60,000 to 100,000 words, which translates to approximately 200-400 pages depending on formatting and the specific genre of the novel. Ultimately, the length of your novel should be determined by the needs of the story and not a set number of pages.
in the books I've read, I've seen a range of maybe about 4-20 pages in a chapter. it really doesn't matter. just keep going until you've reached a point that's either very suspenseful for the reader or a spot for the reader to take a break and digest what they've read.
Have more than 100 pages but less than 500 pages. I think the average story is about 300 pages, but flow with your story and don't make it stretch out for too long or it wont be as good. Make a plan and make sure you describe things a lot so the reader can vision it properly! :)
