There are current estimates of about 1,600 Giant Pandas alive in the wild, according to one type of survey, but with a new DNA based study, the number maybe higher, even as many as 2,000 to 3,000, but the figures are uncertain. The IUCN Red List has not officially listed the new survey results due to the small range in which it was conducted. This difference will not be settled until another survey is preformed to try and get a final correct count, with matching techniques of study over a large area. For now, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or IUCN Red List is using the 1,600 figure as the current population for the wild Giant Panda, and the Giant Panda continues to be listed as "endangered" with a population trend of "decreasing" according to the IUCN Red List.
