according to the 2001 census 90.2% < around are white British. But your question will only be unravelled in 2011 march 27th when that census is done, i predict around 88% will be British and about 75% will be English, British meaning ; England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. following with an increase from 5% to 6% Asian, with the Chinese included should be around 8% Asian, and 3% Black ( African and Caribbeans ) which leaves us with 1% other still. hope this helps, its just a prediction as no one will know till march 27th 2011. my prediction is based on the 2001 census.

2006 est : My Guess
English - 80% 75%
White British ( including English - 90%) 83%
South Asian - 5.6% 7%
Black - 2.3% 2.5%
Mixed Race - 1.6% 4.5%
Chinese- 0.7% 1%
Other - 0.6% 2%

How many people are English that live in England?

That depends on how you define 'English' so it's a tricky question. Most people in England (and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) are British citizens, many were born here, others are immigrants who have acquired British citizenship. Do you mean people of traditional English background, roughly white anglo-saxon protestant? My mother's family were French Hugenots who came to England over 300 years ago as a result of religious persecution - do I then qualify as English? The more you look at it, the harder it becomes to define 'English'.

In what way was the American Revolution a social revolution?

England was a constitutional monarchy and installed royal governors in many of the states. English men born in America were never treated with the same dignity or respect as Englishmen born in England. During the Seven Years Wars, an American officer was seen as being of a lower quality and overall rank as an English officer with the same rank, to say an English lieutenant (born in England) was seen as being more important as an English lieutenant born in America. The Revolutionary War put an end to this although the English continued to feel smug even after the War was over.

What is the country origin of the last name smith?

Probably England. Anyone who was a "smith" was a person who made or repaired THINGS...such as goldsmith, silversmith, blacksmith. The name orioginates in the English language and thus from England. However, many people now using the name, Smith, may not have an English heritage. Many people who emmigrated to English speaking lands and had names that mean "smith" in their native language took the surname "Smith" for use in their new homelands. Schmidt and its variants are German examples of this.
