To figure this out, you'll need to know that the circumference of a 40" table is approximately 126". Many designers allow about 30" of space per person at the table's edge, especially in commercial applications. Therefore, 4 people can fit at a 40" round table. (For residential settings, you can sometimes plan for 24" per person and might be able to squeeze in an extra chair.)
