Too many. It is difficult to say because persons, when they get on drugs, tend to associate with other users and sellers. These persons usually gravitate to the lower income neighborhoods, where the police don't bother them very often. Also they frequent 'crack houses', and sometimes die there, sickly and emaciated. If their bodies are dumped in a field or in a dumpster with no Identification, how can those ones be counted?
I did some research and I came up with this. 8 to 10 thousand people worldwide die each year from opiates. When mixed with alcohyol or benzos the risk of death goes up by 50 percent. With that factor included worldwide deaths due to mixing opiates with other substances. Other than pot. Its harmless. Goes up to 22 thousand worldwide last year alone. So do it in moderation. Experienced users no more than 60 to 75 mg will be sufficient. In new users start out as low of a dsage as possible and see what your reaction is. Try 15 mg and wait an hour. If you still need more take another 15 mg oxycodone and wait another hour. Repeat as needed but don't do over 45 mg.

If you are asking what the significance of the study of addiction I can answer you there. There are many, many reasons that people study the nature of drug and alcohol addiction. Probably the main reason that people study addiction is because it has touched them somehow. Usually they have been affected by it personally or even a close family member or friend. Or other times it might just be someone that has a desire to learn about addiction. I have heard that it takes a very special person to even want to become a addiction counselor or work in the field of addiction studies. It takes someone with a lot of heart and compassion. Substance abuse is a very serious problem in the world today. Studying addiction can help people learn ways to try to better society as a whole. It can be a very interesting subject, and is usually Psychology based.
It's estimated that approximately 9 million people currently struggle with a prescription drug addiction in America. As far as how many people throughout the world, I have no idea. Sorry!
