For all practical purposes, signing the 1776 Declaration of Independence was an act of treason against England. None of the signers, however, were tracked down and charged with a crime by the British. With that said, seventeen of the signers served in the American Revolutionary army and five were captured by the British. Richard Stockton, a signer from New Jersey was one of those captured. He was tortured by the British and died from this in 1781.
