They are not sure how many people had moved to America because of the Famine but they know that it had caused more than two-thirds of the population to move there. Some of them came back after the Famine.

It is debatable... Ireland's population was almost 8million before the famine. It is estimated that 1.5million people died during the famine and by the end of it the population of Ireland stood at about 3.8million. Based on those approximations - about 2.5million people.

Apparently there are about 45 millions Americans who can claim Irish descent, most as a result of the famine. And 1/3 of the Australian population can claim Irish descent also - though that, in fairness, has more to do with the penal colonies than the famine. It is worth noting that however, as alot of crimes committed during the famine resulted in deportation to the penal colonies
