Although there have been several added components over the years, the International Space Station has been operational since its launch in 1998. The last component is scheduled to be delivered to orbit later this year. The normal occupancy is six scientists and crew.
There are already people living in space, in the International Space Station, even as I type. No one can possibly know what the human race will be doing (or even if it will still exist) in the year 3000. It is hard enough to make a meaningful prediction about the year 2010, which will be arriving in a few months.
There have been no reported instances of individuals dying in space since the beginning of space exploration. All astronauts have returned safely to Earth.
