I went to the hajj of december 2006.
According to people I traveled with there were 5.5 million people attending.
I am currently living in California.
One of my friends told me that hajj of 2011 which is supposedly hajj akbar will be the most in the history of hajj.
So my guess would be 6-7 million.
Could be wrong though.
Peace to All
5.2 million on the record and round about 4 to 6 hundred thousand off the record
33,00,000 lakh
So many people have performed Hajj 7 or more times.
He performed Hajj only once in his life. Hajj is obligatory on Muslims just once in their life time.
Muhammad (may peace be upon him) performed Hajj only once. This Hajj is also known as "Hijjat-ul-Widaa".
Hajj is obligatory on each Muslim man and woman once in lifetime. It can be performed only during fixed days.
At Hajj season when Hajj is preformed many people go to worship Allah (G_d) and pray in front of Masjid al-Haram. But, people that celebrate Hajj has to go to Mecca to perform Hajj once in a lifetime

Yes, the hajj that Muhammad made is the same way that Muslims today make hajj. Muslims got the steps of hajj through Prophet Muhammad (S), from many hadith, or sayings, of the Prophet. There are many, so see the link below, which links to Sahih Bukhari, a book which contains the authentic sayings of Muhammad (S). The link takes you to the chapter on hajj, where you can see the hadith about how the Prophet performed his pilgrimage, which is how Muslims do today.
Just once.
