One hundred and fifty-four sonnets were contained in the omnibus Shake-speare's Sonnets published in 1609. Thirty-six plays were in the First Folio collection of 1623, but not included in this collection was Pericles (published in 1609) and The Two Noble Kinsmen (co-written with John Fletcher and published in 1634).

William Shakespeare wrote 34 plays that we know of. He possibly co-wrote 2 other plays and there is a theory that Shakespeare actually wrote 40 plays in total but we cannot find 6 of them.

There were also 154 sonnets.

We don't know how many sonnets were written by Shakespeare, because we do not know how many of these were unpublished and subsequently became lost.In his published works, the First Quarto of Shakespeare's Sonnets contains 154 such poems. Other sonnets appear within his published plays and in the collection of poems entitled The Passionate Pilgrime. There are numerous theories as to the identity of the dark lady of the Sonnets. None are proven. However, the only realistic candidate to date is Emilia Bassano (as brought out in The Biography in Shakespeare's Sonnets - see related link below).

What are some ways in which shakespeares plays and sonnets still live today?

Shakespeare's plays still live because people keep on performing them all the time and all over the planet. His sonnets get anthologized and read all the time too. Shakespeare's plays and sonnets are often a part of school literature curricula and why not? Even the internet helps. Do you know how many websites there are about Shakespeare? How many videos of people saying speeches from the plays? Or reading the sonnets? It boggles the mind.

Why did William Shakespeare only write poems and plays?

He wrote song lyrics too; does that count? Some people write poetry for fun or to express their thoughts and feelings. Shakespeare was one. Sonnets were a form he liked. He did not write very many short verses that were not sonnets. Everything else he wrote, he wrote to make money. He was in an acting company; they needed plays; he could write them. They did not need recipes or sermons or epitaphs or anything apart from plays, so plays is what he wrote.
