There was one radio operator per bomber plane in the airforce planes. This one was easy. My father was a radio operator in the 8th Air Force in World War 2.
"Rakkasan" is, when loosely translated from Japanese to English; Paratrooper or Parachute. The 187th Airborne REGIMENT fought originally as part of the 11th Airborne Division during WW2 in the Pacific. Intercepted Japanese radio transmissions during WW2 indicated that "Rakkasans" were paratroopers; the men of the 187th Regiment liked the name, and adapted it as their "nickname." When the 187th Regiment deployed to Vietnam, they were part of the 101st Airborne Division. It was the 187th that took the brunt of the fight for Hamburger Hill in 1969. the 187th Airborne Regt. Combat Team was relieved from the 11th Airborne Division in 1950 and deployed to Korea. In 1951 there was a 3 day pass prize for the best patch submitted by members of the 187th (in Beppu, Japan) That is how the patch of the 187th Airborne RCT originated. I might add that I did NOT win the 3 day pass for best shoulder patch design for the 187th Airborne RCT............

Some of the professions that are declining are woodworkers, photography specialists, credit and file clerks, computer operators, book binders and radio announcers/operators. Pumping station operators and tool cutters are two more.
Amateur Radio.
Before "Foxtrot," the radio operator code word is "Echo."
The word amateur comes from the Latin "amat" meaning he (or she !) loves. An amateur is a person who does something for the love of it, not because he has to or makes money at it. He is usually knowledgeable, often beyond the level of many professionals; every amateur was a beginner once, but it doesn't last long! -------- Since this question is in amateur radio, the answer should be specific to the "amateur" in "amateur radio." In this case, it means that the amateur radio operator cannot use radio for pay or profit. --------- Amateur radio operators have invented almost every type of electronic communication protocol that has ever been used. They are very good at what they do! Some people confuse amateur radio operators with citizen's band (CB) operators... CB operators are not required to be licensed nor know anything about radio communication... where-as, amateur radio operators must pass a Federal Government written test about electronics, radio control and operation, along with the rules and regulations set forth by the FCC. Amateur radio operators are the 'professionals' in non-paid electronic communications, electronic and satellite development and emergency communication.
Radio is so much easier to get the message out and have fun entertainment. There are a lot of the company's out there that provide free radio streaming. There is more internet radio's than there is FM world wide.
