There are exactly seven red stripes and six white striped on the US Flag for a total of 13, representing the 13 original US colonies. There are a total of 50 stars on the American flag - one for each state.
Since the first US flag in 1777 there have been 27 different numbers and arrangements of stars. In 1795 after Kentucky and Vermont joined the US we added two more stars to the original 13 and two more stripes to the original 13. This is our "Star Spangled Banner" to which we dedicate our National Anthem: It has 15 stars and 15 stripes. In 1818, the Legislature decided to go back to 13 red and white alternating stripes representing the original 13 states and add a new star to the flag on the 4th of July for each new state.
