400 times a day
Each day your kidneys process around 200 liters of blood. All of the blood must cycle through the kidneys.
All the blood passes through
the kidneys
The kidneys are responsible for cleaning the blood in the body. The kidneys are severely affected by drinking alcohol for example because of this purpose.
It helps cleaning our blood, because without the kidneys a person could not live. If a person's kidneys are not functioning, they can be exposed to a dialysis machine which help keep the kidneys cleaning the blood. The kidneys also produce urea, a major part of urine.
A total of 425 gallons or 1609 liters of blood passes through our kidneys every day. Approximately a quarter of our total blood is in our kidney at a time and the entire blood is cleaned every 50 minutes.
Each day your kidneys process around 53 gallons of blood, with around a quarter to a half gallon of waste leaving the body as urine. No water in its pure form goes through the kidneys... only the amount of water that is in the blood.
Not all blood passes through the kidneys each time, in the way all blood passes through the lungs. About 20% of the blood leaving the heart passes through the kidneys, meaning that all of a persons blood should pass through the kidneys about 12 times every hour.
The kidneys filter blood and control the level of salts.
It is the Kidneys that remove the waste products from the blood and filtration of the blood is done by the glomeruli of the kidneys.
