This is obviously referring to shellfish. My take on this is God is the dad and he is talking to his toddler (us in the day of Leviticus). God (dad) knows that some shellfish carry life threatening parasites that can kill us or make us very sick. At this stage in our development we (the toddler) cannot differentiate between infected and non infected so our loving father tells us just don't eat them. We miss out on a potentially tasty meal but also avoid potential death in a society that cannot treat the poisoning or detect which shellfish are infected.

Jesus amended this dietary restriction in the New Testament. I believe there is also a mention of the "Red tide" in The Bible. The infection in shellfish is more likely to occur if there is a red appearance to the tide..I will have to look for that
