Most versions do not translate any word as whale, but may use a phrase such as 'sea monsters instead. Generally it is thought to mean any large sea creature that is not a fish. Others such as the KJV do use the word in the following places:
Genesis 1:21
And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Job 7:12
Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch over me? Ezekiel 32:2
Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers. Matthew 12:40
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
"Whale" and variants thereof appear four times in the Project Gutenberg text of the King James version:
* "whales" in Genesis 1:21, * "whale" in Job 7:12, * "whale" in Ezekiel 32:2, and * "whale's" in Matthew 12:40.
Note that "whale" does not appear in the Book of Jonah, which refers to a "great fish"; however, Matthew 12:40 says that Jonah was in "the whale's belly" for three days.
Job 7:12 Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch over me? Ezekiel 32:2 Son of man, take up a lamentation for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou art like a young lion of the nations, and thou art as a whale in the seas: and thou camest forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers. Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
