A LARGE CITY CAN HAVE AS MANY AS 10,000 INTERSECTIONS. MULTIPLY THIS TIMES ROUGHLY EIGHT AND IT IS CONCIEVABLE THAT A CITY SUCH AS LOS ANGELES OR HOUSTON COULD HAVE 80 THOUSAND TRAFFIC SIGNALS HANGING IN THEIR INTERSECTIONS. MULTIPLY THAT TIMES THREE AND THATS 240 THOUSAND LIGHT BULBS. ADD IN THE OVERHEAD LIGHTS AND PEDESTRIAN LIGHTS AND YOU APPROACH A MILLION LIGHTS OR MORE!
(AND YOU THOUGHT YOUR ELECTRIC BILL WAS HIGH). LOL
There are thousands of traffic lights in London because it is such a large city.

It means how many miles per gallon you can get driving around a city type area, example, a city would have a lot more traffic lights and stop signs than a highway which takes more gas. So when you see something say a cars "City MPG" its telling you how many miles you can get with one gallon in a area where traffic doesn't keep flowing.
Many times when calculating miles per gallon, automotive companies will list both city mpg and highway mpg. City driving includes less miles, but more stopping and starting, and idling in traffic.
The 1999 Ford Expedition gets about 16 miles per gallon at its very best. On average this vehicle gets 12 miles per gallon in city traffic.

If it is "Bumper to Bumper Traffic" there could be as many as 250 vehicles in each lane per mile.
Above 35,000 people were killed in traffic collisions per year.

Most likely, over a million and I'm just guessing ... There are over a fifty million. In cities, most intersections have eight or more traffic signals per major intersection. A city as big as L. A. can have 10,000 intersections. Multiply that times eight. Each intersection can have eight or more signal heads. Each head can have 3 to 7 light bulbs. We are talking some serious numbers. That's not counting pedestrian lights, overhead luminaires, and sign lights. (not to mention highway overhead lights). 50 million is just a guess but its and educated conservative guess. Pressed for accuracy I would guess higher rather than lower.
A taxi would cost from 50euro to 75euro depending on traffic, time of day, and drop off point. Many shuttles operate from the airport to city center locations - from 25 euro per person to 10 euro per person with 6 or more.
About 39 million gallons are wasted a year in traffic for the average person. Think about how many gallons are wasted a year in the whole world.
Near the end of the 19th century, New York City was heavily congested as its population had been growing steadily. To ease street traffic, the city built elevated railway lines. By 1876, there were forty trains per day running.
