Japan is susceptible to many earthquakes, tsunamis and volcano eruptions of various degrees of intensity because it lies on the Ring of Fire.
There were no tsunamis of note in the year of 2000. In four more years, there would be one of the most devastating tsunamis of this century in Indonesia. The tsunami that hit Phuket in 2004 was historical.
Tsunamis happen on parts of the earth where there is more of a chance of earthquakes (fault lines) or other natural events (like landslides) which would cause the major wave to be created and fostered. More recently, famous tsunamis have been in Southeast Asia (Thailand area) in December 2004, and Japan (located on the Ring of Fire) in March 2011.
They effect the price of many goods. Say there is a tsunami in a country or area that pproduces many goods. Take Japan, the price of electronics has gone up. So yea tsunamis effect the econmic tatus of countries.
