As of September 7th, 2012, there have been 1,986 American military personnel killed by enemy action in Afghanistan.
An additional 118 soldiers were killed in other countries in operations supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. 17,382 American soldiers have been wounded due to enemy action. Three Defense Department civilian employees have also been killed.
There is no total account of people who have died during Operation Enduring Freedom because the battles are still going on. As of April 1, 2014 about 3,500 people have died. Over 2,300 of them from the United States. The highest death toll occurred in 2010, with the United States losing nearly 500 and the total being 711 for that year.
