The ENIAC has 17,468 vacuum tubes. These tubes were the first technology that made computers function. Modern computers do not use this technology.
The Eniac had 17,468 vacuum tubes. The Eniac (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer) is recognized as the first electronic general-purpose computer.
ENIAC which stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer was invented in the year 1943. It was made using 18000 vacuum tubes and covered a space of 1500 meter square.
ENIAC was the first digital general purpose computer, built in 1946, and with 17,468 vacuum tubes. The Illiac I, the first computer built and owned by a US educational institution, had 2800 vacuum tubes. The IBM 604 had about 2000 vacuum tubes.
As , When the time ENIAC was built semiconductors were not invented so it used vaccum tubes as switching device, and it used around 16000 tubes so it had to be placed in a room of around 800 sq.ft,this was one of the prblm and another was that it could not store instructions.
None, the transistor did not yet exist. It was built with vacuum tubes and had roughly 18,000 of them. When a project was done to recreate ENIAC on a chip, it took about 180,000 transistors. But you have to realize that the vast majority of these transistors are not active processing transistors, but are just switches to simulate the plugging in of the program cables into different connectors on the various panels. Only one wafer of ENIAC on a chip was ever made, it needed a PC to translate a cabling diagram to internal switch settings and load the settings into the chip. The PC was a more powerful computer than ENIAC. Most of the ENIAC on a chip devices never saw use, they went to museums or computer history collectors.
The edvac came after the eniac (its predecessor). The main difference was that with the eniac if you wanted to complete a certain process different vacuum tubes had to be tampered with, whereas with the edvac john von neumann and others realised that computers could be programmed which meant you didnt have to tamper with the hardware each time you wanted to complete a different a task.
They are first generation computers because they used vacuum tubes as active elements, as did almost all computers until 1958 when the first generation is usually considered to have ended. From 1958 on most computers used discrete transistors as active elements until 1964.Note: ABC & ENIAC are both very early first generation computers as they used ordinary Radio receiver vacuum tubes, not the more expensive Computervacuum tubes that were introduced about 1948 to 1949. The later Computer vacuum tubes were custom redesigned versions and were far more reliable than ordinary Radio vacuum tubes had been.
ENIAC
Eniac didn't have any transistors. It was built with 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7,200 crystal diodes, and a whole host of other components. But no transistors. The first transistor was created in November, 1947, almost two years after Eniac was completed.
it used 1800 vacuum tubes

It was difficult to change directions and the vacuum tubes always burned out

Oh yes - and for several generations after that. ENIAC, the first mainframe computer, had to be kept in a room with very heavy air conditioning (about 60 degrees) because of the heat generated by all the vacuum tubes.

In 1946two Americans, Presper Eckert, and John Mauchly built the ENIAC electronic computer which used vacuum tubes instead of the mechanical switches of the Mark I. The ENIAC used thousands of vacuum tubes, which took up a lot of space and gave off a great deal of heat just like light bulbs do. The ENIAC led to other vacuum tube type computers like the EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer) and the UNIVAC I (UNIVersal Automatic Computer).
He improved upon the design by adding Vaccum Tubes
