You can learn about seven(7) words a day. Any more and you won't be able to remember them. Your brain can only receive five to seven words a day.

Answer

From my personal experience, 10 is a good number if you're cramming new words for the SAT or TOEFL test. Just remember to start accumulating words 3-4 months before the test. One month after the test day, you'll find yourself forgetting 40% of the words.

If you're learning in a long run, remember to learn at most 7 words per day, as the user above indicated. More and you'll definitely fail.

I used to learn 24 words per day (!) using flashcard, and after three months I amassed 2000 pieces of flashcards. Sadly only around 800-900 of them turned into a part of my vocabulary and ready to be used. The rest was useless. Hundreds of hours and papers were wasted for nothing.

I believe quality is better that quantity so the number of words a child or a person learns is not that important. It is also pointless to compare because people have different skills, capacities and development progress. The important thing is to practice and have access to appropriate educational materials to improve and develop reading skills. You can visit educationalfun.info for such materials and helpful techniques to learn and teach reading.

That would depend on a number of factors. If the language is similar or relates in some way to yours, like English to German to Dutch (they have more in common than you might think), or Italian to Spanish to Portuguese to French, it helps immensely in remembering newly learned vocabulary. The amount of time spent studying (self study, evening classes, immersion course etc.) and the location (do you study at home, at school or are you abroad learning it) would be as important as your memory capabilities. While you might be able to remember ten, twenty or fifty words at the end of the day, you have not truly "learned" them, until you remember and use them later on. Even then, one has to constantly "re-learn" words in her/his vocabulary, in order to maintain a fluent speech. Basically, how many foreign words you can learn per day is different for each individual.

What is Strengthening vocabulary skills?

Reading improves vocabulary by introducing a large range of words used correctly, helping readers get a glimpse of what these new words mean and intaking new vocabulary. Depending on what the situation is based on (e.g. A monster crept behind Bill. "Watch out!" SHRIE KED Mandy,) in a reading passage, new vocabulary may be easier or harder to figure out. Either ways, you'll have those new words in your head and by reading more, you may come across those words again, and slowly start to understand them. Even coming across words, then searching up is an effective way of learning new vocabulary- and is done in reading. It really is the best individual/isolated way to learn new vocabulary. When you read, you learn new words and new ways of speaking.
