The authorities usually tell you that it will take 6 to 8 weeks. But they give such a long time frame just to be on the safer side. It usually takes about 2 weeks in reality.

When do you get a social security card. I have the number but not was given a card. I'm sixteen by the way.?

Assuming you're in the UK... You're usually sent a card with your NI number on by post, shortly before your sixteenth birthday. If you've not received yours yet, simply contact your local social security office (Jobcentre plus). They'll be able to tell you who to contact to get a replacement card sent out. Having said that - so long as you have something 'official' with your NI number on it - it's rare you'll ever be asked for your original card anyway.
