Almost all insects have four wings, but the mosquito is one of only a few types of insects that actually only has two wings. Mosquitoes, Flies, Gnats and all the members of the hymenoptera or bee family only have two wings. However, there are two funny little knobs behind the first set of wings that are probably evolutionary remainders of what used to be a second set of wings.
(Note - Hymenoptera DO NOT have 2 wings, they do however, have 2 sets of wings giving a total of 4 wings! Hymenoptera includes ants, bees, wasps and sawflies. Mosquitoes are in the order diptera, not hymenoptera, insects in the diptera order do have 2 wings, which includes flies and mosquitoes.
Insects have two pairs of wings on each side of their body, so they have four wings in total. however flies and moskitoes only have one pair.
Fleas do not have wings, but they have very strong legs capable of jumping up to 750 cm.
A horsefly has two wings which is uses to quickly move through the air. As their name implies, they are often found around horses and other livestock.
