Only one. Dame Jenny Shipley assumed the role of Prime Minister of New Zealand on December the 8th 1997. She took over the office of Prime Minister after assuming leadership of the National Party from Jim Bolger.

Since Dame Jenny Shipley there has only been one other female Prime Minister, Helen Clarke, who, as leader of the Labour Party, led the Government from 1999 to 2008.
