To earn your PhD in Biology, you will first need to complete bachelors degree which takes anywhere from 4 to 5 years. Many people go on to earn a masters degree in a more specialized field, which will take between 2 and 3 years. If a non-thesis option is chosen, the student takes classes and may have to write a long essay on a particular topic. If a thesis option is chosen, the student performs original research with a mentor and writes a paper on their results, a thesis. A thesis option, as you can imagine, takes significantly longer. After the student has earned their M.S. they may choose to build upon this research to earn a PhD, which can take four more years, or longer, of additional research and course work. Increasingly, students are opting to go directly into a PhD program after their bachelors degree is completed. This is because it is quicker and the research done in what would be the master's degree portion is directly applicable to the PhD portion. Because of this, it is usually quicker to get a PhD directly. However, some schools only admit students into a PhD program who already have a M.S. degree. Other students opt for a M.S. degree first because they are unsure they want to commit to 6-8 years of study on one project. Time to earn graduate degrees has increased significantly over the past 50 years. In the past, it would be unheard of for a student to spend more than four years on a masters + PhD program. Today, nine to ten years is not unheard of. It all depends on how lucky you are with your research, how good you are at choosing a focused and workable project and most importantly, how sadistic your principle investigator (research mentor) is.
