The very basic of genetics underlies all breeding is that parents with desirable traits can have children with those same desirable traits. A more detailed understanding of genetics allows one to figure out the odds of those traits passing on, understand how it is done, and better plan to bring out traits that are desirable. This is useful because it gives the breeders a better precision in matching parents/source genetic information that will produce viable and desirable traits in the offspring.

Then, instead of using inbreeding to maintain the animal's desirable traits, they might produce clones of that animal. The clones would be genetically identical to the original animal and thus would have all of its desirable traits.

Scientists take care of these things. Farmers are not expected to "produced better plants". Farmers produces better yield out of the varities developed by the Scientists. They use genetics to figure out if they will have a runt plant or not. first they use P generation, in this they take two homozygous dominant plants and they make them fertilize each other. Then they get F1 generation and so on......However several cross tests have to be conducted to see if there is any harmfull affects on consumption on living bodies. International and area specific quarantines are there. After going through all the processes Foundation seeds are developed....then Certified seeds. These seeds are made available to farmers. The entire process may take upto 7 years of time.
