Notaries are very rarely able to make enough income to be self-supporting. Each state prescribes the maximum allowed notary fees which can range from $0.25 in some states to $10.00 in others. Many notaries also travel around and notarize loan documents and can get paid up to $100.00 for one of these signings. However, with the current economy the number of loan signings is low, and most notaries have had to obtain regular full time jobs to make ends meet.
They do it for free I've heard.

To become a notary, you will need to receive training from the National Notary Association. This generally costs about $500.
No. As of June 1st, 2010, FedEx Office (aka Kinkos) no longer provides Notary services.
Depends on the type of notary. If they are a realtor or banker they notarize in conjunction with these services. I am a notary and do not work with a company and didn't get the extra training to notarize real estate forms. That was an extra cost for training and another test. As it was I paid 600.00 for training, finger printing, bonding, and the state test. I can only charge 15.00 per signature when I do a notarization. I am not getting rich off of this and I will have to retake training and the test in 4 years.
A doctor could be a notary public only if they have received notary commission from the notary control board of the state they are in. A doctor would not pick this title up automatically when he/she becomes a doctor.
One can find much information about Public Notary on Wikipedia. It has much detail on the history of the Public Notary and how it works in each country around the world. One can also find information on the website 'The Notaries Society'.

There would be no need for a notary to be on a phone call between a lawyer and client. I am a notary and my job is to notarize documents not listen in between client and attorney.
You do not need a notary public to buy or sell a car, but make sure you have a clear, signed receipt for the sale.
A will with a notarized witness can only be made in the presence of a notary. A notary is the only person who is legalized by the state to perform such an action.
