This was Ruben Salazar, a Mexican-American journalist from the Chicano community who was killed on 29th August 1970 by a tear-gas baton round fired by a sherriff's deputy in Laguna Park, East Los Angeles during an anti- Vietnam War demonstration. An investigation determined that his death was accidental and no criminal charges were brought, but his family reached an out of court settlement with the county. He was 42 years old. After his death, he was posthumously awarded a special John F.Kennedy Journalism Award, and Laguna Park was renamed Salazar Park in his honour.
